Official data from here

One Google sign-in, read-only. We read clicks, impressions, average position and the queries behind them. The Search Traffic Analyst starts work as soon as it is connected: last 28 days against the 28 before, top queries and pages, brand versus non-brand, which queries sit at positions 4 to 20, and how much traffic the pages the team published are getting.

What the numbers can and cannot tell you
  1. The only first-party view of Google

Search Console is where Google itself reports clicks, impressions and position. Some rare queries are withheld for privacy, so the query list is never complete, and the report says so.

  2. Positions 4 to 20 are where pages move

A query already on the first or second page is one a better page can lift. The Search Traffic Analyst lists them, which is where the writers start.

  3. It reports search, not AI answers

Google counts AI Overview clicks and impressions inside the same totals without a separate filter, so Search Console cannot tell you how often AI answers cite you. Source does that part by asking the engines directly.
